          Burning in Bridger Canyon

Note: As of 2010 Burn permits are no longer sold by fire departments except Central Valley FD, they are available online at www.burnpermits.mt.gov

In light of recent events, there has been a wealth of misinformation regarding burn permits. This page was set up to help clarify some of this. If your questions are not answered here, please contact us by email or call 586-6427.

1. Bridger Canyon Fire Department did NOT issue a burn permit on September 26th 2009.
2. Burn Permits for the County are issued through local fire departments and the Forest Service for your convenience.
3. You can purchase a burn permit for example from Fort Ellis FD and use it in Three Forks.
4. Burning in the County is permitted unless there is a burn ban in effect. See below for more information on conditions.
5. Burning in Gallatin County is permitted from March 1st through November 30th
6. You do not need to burn on the day you purchase a permit. You can purchase a permit say in April and decide not to burn until November.
7. With burning there are risks!

On the permit are "Fire Control Restrictions and Duties in Gallatin County"

Number 2 states - Preparation for fires. Before a fire is set, the Permit Holder or Designee shall ensure that adequate fire suppression equipment and personnel are present for fire control for the duration of the burn.

Number 3 states - Safe Conditions. No fire shall be set if wind or other weather conditions make it hazardous to burn.

Number 5 states - Control of Fire. The Permit Holder or Designee shall not leave the immediate fire area until the fire has completely burned out, that is, with no embers or smoke remaining.

These are just a few of the restrictions and duties that are imposed on people who decide to burn in Gallatin County. The Permit Holder agrees to these restrictions and duties when they sign and pay for their permit. If you have any further questions, please contact us.
